The difference between auto-activation in font managers

Basic font managers – like Apple’s Font Book™ — can be adequate if you work with a very limited number of fonts infrequently. If you work with professional tools like Adobe® Illustrator®, InDesign®, Photoshop®, InCopy® or QuarkXPress® – you need a professional font manager.

Desktop Global Auto-Activation

Our Mac OSX font management products can automatically activate fonts for most applications, even without the use of a plug-in. With Suitcase Fusion, users can select for which applications they would like to allow to globally auto-activate fonts, extending auto-activation beyond the built-in plug-ins. By selecting which applications can activate fonts via global auto-activation, Suitcase Fusion can prevent an application from inadvertently overriding the preferred versions of fonts. While global auto-activation does not offer the same precision font activation as the plug-ins, it can be helpful when used properly.

Font Sense goes beyond identifying fonts by name. Unique identifiers that guarantee the correct identification of a font are created for every font in the collection. Font Sense allows multiple unique copies of a single font to be maintained, ensuring that the correct font is always used for a document.

With many fonts in existence for many years, with a wide variation in font formats and updates to the font – though not necessarily updates to the font’s PostScript™ name. For example, many fonts were created prior to the creation of the Euro, and would not include the glyph to represent it. Font Sense ensures that the correct fonts used to design the document is selected when it is printed.

As they are added to Suitcase Fusion, the glyph traits of your fonts are inspected and stored for future reference.

When you are browsing your collection and need to find a similar font to one in your collection, enter any text into the Preview Pane with QuickType™ and then choose QuickMatch. Suitcase Fusion quickly does a glyph-level comparison of the characters entered into the preview pane and locates fonts that contain similar glyphs.

Want to locate all of the fonts that contain a similar type of lowercase “g”? QuickMatch can tell you almost instantaneous which fonts in your collection contain the much sought after glyph.
