Important information about migrating to a new machine
There are a series of critical steps you should follow in order to avoid the loss of important data when migrating from your current machine to a new machine. Since your data includes fonts, the following basic instructions will take you through the process of migrating from one machine to the next. The easiest method is to use the Migration Assistant provided by Apple, but we’ve also included instructions about how to manually move your fonts, should you wish to do so. Extensis strongly recommends using the Migration Assistant.
Migrating to a new machine using the Mac OS X Migration Assistant:
Note: If you are using Font Reserve 3, you must upgrade to Suitcase Fusion on the source machine before following this procedure. Read the Upgrading from Font Reserve to Suitcase Fusion document located on your product disc for complete details.
- The first step is to consolidate all of your fonts on the source machine.
If you have Suitcase Fusion already installed, we recommend adding all of your fonts to the Font Vault. If you choose not to use the vault, be sure that any fonts added “in place” are within your user folder. When migrating user data with the Migration Assistant, the contents of user folders are automatically copied, so your fonts will be automatically moved. If you are using Suitcase X1 or another font manager that manages fonts “in place,” Extensis also recommends moving all of your fonts into your user folder.
- After consolidating your fonts, in Suitcase Fusion choose View > Show Missing Fonts. This displays any fonts that were added in place, and can’t currently be located by Suitcase. Resolve any missing font issues before proceeding. For all other font managers, resolve any missing fonts before proceeding.
- Connect the destination machine to the source machine with a firewire cable and on the destination machine run the Migration Assistant. Only machines running Mac OS X version 10.4 or higher include the Migration Assistant. If your destination machine is running 10.3.9, you may use the manual procedure outlined below, or use the Setup Assistant as described in the following article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25773
- Proceed to the after migrating fonts steps below.
Manually migrating fonts to a new machine:
If you are an advanced user, you may wish to manually migrate your fonts from one machine to another. You will need to manually move a number of files from the source machine to the destination machine. This can be done over a network, or by burning the files to CD or DVD.
If you have added fonts “in place,” for ease of migration, consolidate your fonts into as few locations as possible. If you are using Suitcase X1 or another font manager that manages fonts “in place,” Extensis also recommends moving all of your fonts into your user folder.
- After consolidating your fonts, in Suitcase Fusion choose View > Show
Missing Fonts. This displays any fonts that were added in place, and
can’t currently be located by Suitcase. Resolve any missing font issues
before proceeding. For all other font managers, resolve any missing fonts before proceeding.
- If you already have Suitcase Fusion installed, you will need to move a few files to maintain all of your fonts and settings on the destination machine. These files must be moved and placed in the same relative location on the destination machine. The first file to move is the Font Vault from the following location:
<hard disk>/Users/<user name>/Library/Application Support/Extensis/Suitcase/Suitcase Font Database.suitcasevault
- If you are using Suitcase Fusion, move the preferences plist file from the following location:
<hard disk>/Users/<user name>/Library/Preferences/
com.extensis.SuitcaseFusion.plist
If you are using Suitcase X1, move the following plist file, as well as the Suitcase Preferences folder and its contents:
<hard disk>/Users/<user name>/Library/Preferences/
com.extensis.Suitcase.plist
<hard disk>/Users/<user name>/Library/Preferences/Suitcase Preferences
- Move any fonts that were added “in place.” If possible, place these fonts in the same relative location on the new machine. Note: Because your destination machine will have a new set of system fonts, do not move system fonts from the source machine. Use Suitcase Fusion to manage system fonts on your new machine.
- Proceed to the After migrating fonts steps below.
After migrating fonts:
- Install Suitcase Fusion on the destination machine.
- Launch Suitcase Fusion. The first time that you launch the application, Suitcase Fusion performs a number of configuration and upgrade processes. Part of this process checks for previous Suitcase installations, as well as any instance of the Font Vault.
- When the upgrade processes are complete, Suitcase Fusion displays a list of any missing fonts. These are typically fonts that have been added “in place.” When you resolve the first missing font, Suitcase Fusion dynamically searches your drive to locate any of the other missing fonts that may be near the first font. After Suitcase Fusion is finished searching, manually resolve any remaining missing fonts.
- Re-manage any system fonts using the Tools > Manage System Fonts command. System Fonts vary by the version of Mac OS X that you have installed. If you are also upgrading your OS from one machine to another, it is very likely that you have an entirely new set of system fonts. System Fonts are not automatically copied by the Migration Assistant, nor does Extensis recommend manually copying them from one machine to another.
- Finally, because plugin preferences are not automatically transferred, reset the plugin-supported auto-activation preferences for each application.
