Font Sense

Font Sense is an advanced font matching technology that works seamlessly with a font manager’s auto-activation plug-ins. It allows for a deep level of font analysis when identifying fonts for auto-activation. Instead of simply selecting and activating the first font with the right name, Font Sense uses multiple criteria, such as font type, foundry, version, etc. to ensure exact font matches.

Why is getting the right version of a font important?

Because different versions of fonts that share the same name can have unique characteristics. Consider that a Helvetica from Adobe may have different character widths than a Helvetica from Apple, even if they were originally licensed from the same type foundry. Two Helveticas from Adobe may even be different—and contain different characters. For example, an older font would likely not include the necessary Euro symbol that is included in new fonts. If an older font is used as a substitute, text can reflow in unexpected ways, wreaking havoc on both the typography and layout, and incorrect glyphs can appear where new glyphs are expected.

Auto-Activation

Suitcase Fusion offers users the ability to automatically activate (turn-on) the exact fonts used in a document when that document is opened. With auto-activation, there's no need to manually activate or de-activate fonts. Suitcase Fusion uses Font Sense™, to identify the exact fonts used in a document, so you can be confident that you have the right fonts you need every time you open a document.

Requirements:
  • Mac OS X 10.3.9 or higher for PowerPC-based systems
  • Mac OS X v10.4.4 or higher for Intel-based systems
  • 1GHz or faster CPU
  • 256MB RAM (512MB recommended)
  • 30MB or more font storage
  • CD-ROM for installation

Before: Opening a document in Quark-XPress, Illustrator or InDesign without Font Sense could result in frustrating font substitution problems which in turn could lead to text re-flow and layout issues.

After: Only Font Sense fingerprints fonts using multiple criteria such as font type, foundry, version, etc. to ensure exact font version matching and auto-activation.

Expanded auto-activation support

Using Font Sense, Suitcase Fusion offers precises font matching and auto-activation in additional design and publishing applications, including:

  • Adobe InDesign CS2 (CS3 coming soon)
  • Adobe Illustrator CS2/CS 3
  • QuarkXPress 7

Font Vault

While previous versions of Suitcase created a database of info about your fonts, the fonts remained in their original location. You still have this option in Suitcase Fusion but also have the option to consolidate your fonts in a structured and secure repository called the Font Vault. The Font Vault gives users much more control over their fonts, eliminating unnecessary font conflicts, duplicate font issues and providing easy access to your own library of clean, optimized fonts.

Typeface activation

Another benefit of the Font Vault is that it automatically splits up font suitcases, allowing you to view, sort and activate (and auto-activate) fonts on a typeface level. This deeper level of font management gives you more control over your fonts, reduces potential font conflicts and saves you additional time and system resources.

View PostScript names

You now have the option to view menu names or PostScript names for fonts, and sort and organize your fonts based on these names.

Intelligent auto-activation

Suitcase Fusion uses Font Sense™ (check out our white paper on Font Sense) —the most advanced font identification technology available—to ensure that when a document is opened, the exact versions of the fonts you need are auto-activated every time. Font Sense uses multiple criteria to identify a font, such as font type, foundry, version, etc., and “fingerprints” the font based on these criteria. Font Sense is available in all popular publishing applications.

Unlimited nested sets

You can now create an unlimited number of nested sets to sort and arrange your fonts to fit your workflow. This makes the job of finding and even archiving fonts easier than ever.

Display custom font information

The familiar Suitcase interface now gives you even more options of what type of font information you want to see and how you want it displayed. You can now view a much deeper level of font information including version, classification, font type, etc.

Customizable foundry and class information

In addition to Styles and Keywords, you can now sort, find and manage fonts based on foundry or classification. Suitcase Fusion will automatically classify fonts but will also let you create new classifications and re-classify fonts.

Duplicate font handling

Suitcase Fusion addresses one of the biggest sources of problems for creative users — duplicate fonts. First, the Font Vault will catch any true duplicates from being added. With those duplicates that have the same name but are not true duplicates, Suitcase Fusion makes it easy to filter, view and manage them. Additionally, you can use Suitcase Fusion’s preference settings to automatically pick the best match in case of duplicates, allowing you to work uninterrupted even when duplicate font issues arise.

Drag-and-drop font exporting

You can now export fonts, type faces, fonts in (nested) sets, font families, even previews simply by dragging-and-dropping them.

Log file for font adding

Suitcase Fusion offers detailed, HTML reports of font adding activity. A new log file is generated each time a user adds fonts and details are added to the file as the add progresses.

Improved Find dialog

Suitcase Fusion gives you the power to perform multi-level searches for your fonts. Choose from pull-down menus that offer the full range of Foundry, Style, Classification and Keyword information about your font library.
