What is Font Sense?
Font Sense is an advanced font matching technology that works seamlessly with a font manager’s auto-activation plug-ins. It allows for a deep level of font analysis when identifying fonts for auto-activation. Instead of simply selecting and activating the first font with the right name, Font Sense uses multiple criteria, such as font type, foundry, version, etc. to ensure exact font matches.
Why is getting the right version of a font important?
Because different versions of fonts that share the same name can have unique characteristics. Consider that a Helvetica from Adobe® may have different character widths than a Helvetica from Apple®, even if they were originally licensed from the same type foundry. Two Helveticas from Adobe may even be different—and contain different characters. For example, an older font would likely not include the necessary Euro symbol [ € ] that is included in new fonts. If an older font is used as a substitute, text can reflow in unexpected ways, wreaking havoc on both the typography and layout, and incorrect glyphs can appear where new glyphs are expected.

Before: Opening a document in QuarkXPress®, Illustrator® or InDesign® without Font Sense could result in frustrating font substitution problems which in turn could lead to text re-flow and layout issues.
After: Only Font Sense fingerprints fonts using multiple criteria such as font type, foundry, version, etc. to ensure exact font version matching and auto-activation.
